A perfect group experience!
3-hour duration

The Mill, The Maker, and the Goat Caper™ experience guides guests through the process of raising trees, land conservation and management, harvesting lumber, green woodworking and carving, and goat hiking.

A fourth-generation family parcel of land, nestled among the hills of Galena, IL, sets the stage for this one-of-a-kind experience. This unique combination of trees, spoons, and goats shows how this symbiotic relationship started and is growing into one of Galena’s finest attractions.

John, the family patriarch, and the land and sawmill owner (The Mill) tells the story and vision of his parents as it pertains to the land. He continues with a tale of love, for trees, land, and family and ends with a desire to pass it on to future generations.

Paul, owner of Galena Spoon Co., and the spoon carver (The Maker), then demonstrates the Traditional American Craft of Green Woodworking. From selecting the raw materials to different carving methods, axe, and knife techniques, to finishes and the care of the final product.

Rounding off the experience is a goat hike led by three generations of the landowner’s family. Explore the forest and prairies while the goats wander by your side and learn how they play an integral role in the present and future of the land.
